Carrying Baggage — A Lesson in Letting Go

One of my daughters has been saying she has nowhere to put her clothes away. Her wardrobe is overflowing — so many clothes, yet she only wears a quarter of them.
The
other day, I decided to help her sort through everything. I spent an hour folding, creating piles — shorts, T-shirts, jumpers — and setting aside anything that was too small, too big, or never worn. When she came home, the chaos had softened. Together, we finished cleaning out her wardrobe, letting go of what no longer fit.
Many of her clothes were hand-me-downs from friends — treasures she loved receiving. But some pieces were too big, or just not her style right now. She’d been holding onto them for later.
And that’s when it hit me — how often do we all do the same?
We hold onto things that don’t fit anymore: old patterns, beliefs, memories, even other people’s opinions. We keep emotional hand-me-downs that once served us, but now feel heavy. Our minds and bodies can start to look a lot like that crowded wardrobe — cluttered, overwhelmed, unsure where to place something new.
When we carry too much, we can start to feel anxious, tired, or disconnected. Our mental and physical wellbeing becomes weighed down by things that no longer belong to who we are becoming.
That simple moment — sorting clothes with my daughter — became a mirror. It reminded me how necessary it is to clear emotional space, to make room for growth.
Mindfulness doesn’t always look like meditating or sitting in silence. Sometimes it’s found in the everyday acts — cleaning, sorting, walking, breathing. When we bring awareness to these moments, we give our minds space to show us what we truly need to see.
This week, as the Full Moon’s energy still lingers and the Spring season unfolds, we’re offered a chance to do the same — to cleanse, reset, and release what no longer serves.
If this message speaks to you, perhaps it’s time to explore your own “mental wardrobe.”To look gently at what’s ready to go and what’s ready to bloom.
If you’d like support as you do, I’d be honoured to walk beside you.
